What is a Commission?

A commission is the hiring and payment for the creation of original art work. A commissioned painting guarantees you will receive what you want in size, colour and image, at a quoted price. Often, artists are asked to commission an artwork of a theme, place, thing, person, etc.

Why Commission a painting?

The benefit of commissioning an original artwork from an artist is that you have the ability to describe the parameters in which you envision the artwork — perhaps for a specific spot in your home, to commemorate a favourite landscape, to request a portrait of a loved one, for a gift; with the addition of the artist’s own creative input. A painting is made from materials that are manipulated by the artist’s hand and completely unique.

How to Commission a painting with Mirja Vahala

Contact Mirja via email or call for an initial consultation regarding your idea for a painting.
Discuss further the size, colour, subject, and time frame.
Mirja will provide preliminary sketches before beginning the painting.
You, the patron and Mirja correspondence until both are happy.
Mirja begins your painting, updating you with images of the painting along the way.
Mirja presents you with the final image of the painting via email or at her studio.
Delivery and payment for your Commissioned Painting are arranged with Mirja.

GUARANTEE: Mirja will paint your commission to the best of her ability based on your requests and in the style presented by her portfolio of work. If you are not satisfied with your commission, you will be reimbursed 80% of the full fee or 100% if the painting is generic enough to resell, such as a landscape.*

Things to discuss with your artist when Commissioning a piece

The artist’s previous work – this ensures the artist has a style that you like
The subject matter
The size and possible placement in your home or office
Colour scheme and style
The mood of the piece: calm, happy, thought-provoking…
Type of medium to be used such as acrylics or oils
Longevity of the piece and type of framing best suited for the medium and surface used

Types of reference needed, such as photos

We had been searching for a unique piece of art work for over our fireplace — a place where we often sit to relax. Nothing we looked for measured up, and finally my husband suggested that we have a painting done from scratch. What would that painting need to look like? We started talking about what scenes were appealing to us: three little children, some rolling hills, a barn, a church, a winding road, and some mountains; these were just a few things that came to mind. I imagined that, one day, I would be able to sit in front of this painting with my grandchildren, and tell a story with it, as we ‘took a walk through’ that picture (storytelling using a picture in front of us was something my own kids would look forward to during our visits to the dentist or doctor’s offices or just during some quiet time).

The masterpiece that hangs on our wall in our living room today is testimony, not only to Mirya’s intuitive listening to our words and our hearts, but her incredible art skills — it is a beautiful landscape where, even though we don’t have grandkids yet, we can still lose ourselves into our “Story time” painting.
